super change of idea

hmmm, before i mentioned about the changes i wanted to undertake for my interpretation.

well, ive stuck to my idea of the large 'covering' over the facade of the museum. the covering will be made of glass so it reflects the structure and concept of the building. i.e. the use of natural light from the glass covering to light up the interior of the museum.

the second change i wanted to undertake was the ramps. at first i made sketches of a new ramp system. however, while modelling, i decided to place an elevator instead. this elevator is cased in glass so that, as the same concept as the ramp, the viewers are able to observe the surrounding interior within the elevator. also, this also makes the museum a whole lot larger and spacy. which promotes circulation. the use of elevators also means more light into the museum and therefore, a better effect in lighting down the walls through the glass roofing.

=) that will be all.

redesigning the silkeborg *another 250 words

after analysing the silkeborg museum and Utzon's style of architecture, i have decided to tweak a little. this is in respect to the architect's initial design as well as providing my own interpretation of the building.
i have taken the idea of 'subtle' as one of the focuses in my redesigning of the museum. through using this word as a basis, i think i will blend the building further into its environment surroundings and provide a more naturalistic facade. i guess the appraoch i will do this is sinking the museum a little more into the ground, this will also show how the internal museum is surrounded by nature (the ground). it will allow me to design a subtle nature design and an entrance that will lead down into the foyer of the museum. in this saying, the museum will be 'hidden' in nature.
the idea of 'continuous' provides me to provide this flowing feel within the museum. there are still some aspects that i feel need to be changed, i.e. the ramp. although the ramp has a nice concept to it, in that it allows the individual to circulate around the floors viewing the artworks, it is somewhat tedious for the individual to come back up and down again after a few times. this ramp also is confusing in that it some parts of the 'intersection' direct the individual somewhere else. so, i feel that i need to tweak the ramp a bit more in order that it provides a free and easy means of travelling throughout the museum as well as maintaining the original concept behind the initial ramp. also, i would like to promote the circulation of the museum in that each space will lead to another and so on, the individual will continuously walk circulate around the museum in one go. this is what i feel i need to do in order to provide a 'flowing' feel within the museum.
at the same time, i want to make this museum 'monumental', i know i said earlier that the museum will be subtle, but i feel that it can be both. so the approach i will take will be something i will have to think about a lot. maybe it might have to do something about the internal space other than the external. and it will be a contrast to monumental buildings as well as most of the time, its monumentality is relied on its facade. so, i will still have to think about how i will achieve this idea.
in conclusion, these ideas of a subtle, continuous and monumental silkeborg museum will i guess provide a new experience for indivduals and provide a different 'feel' to the design of the museum.

silkeborg museum research *250 words

the silkeborg museum has distinct forms and design which make it significant due to the experience of the individual walking thorough the curved surfaces. however, the unique architecture is unbuilt and still remains a work with many interpretations of the form and structure.

the interior of the unbuilt project is special in the sense that Utzon carefully designed the structure in the way that would reflect a free flowing curved environment. one factor which caught my attention was the various thicknesses of different walls, although the walls were mostly curved with different geometry, the different thicknesses provide a 'natural' sense towards the interior. the exterior on the other hand, completely suits the surrounding of the intended site of construction. the exterior of the museum also provides this curved form which somewhat appears to be a rock formation. this provides a strong sense of 'nature' playing an important role in Utzon's architecture.

the fact that Utzon wanted to build the museum three stories underground also contributes to this idea of a natural surrounding in that the museum will be mostly bounded by the earthly elements. as described: “The design of this buried museum has a character rather like a cave or an oven. Because they are a direct continuation of the walls of the museum, the visible one-storey roof lights suggest this cave-like character and clearly demonstrate the reason for their special design." i agree in this as it does provide a cave like structure in that the limited sunlight and continuous walls supply a organic cave like feel.

another aspect towards this unbuilt architecture is the place of ramps which travel and 'glide' down the underground space. although this is a very practical idea which is somewhat effective, i feel it becomes a lillt annoying for individuals to walk through the interior due to its long and winding ramps. however, in the same sense, it does fit nicely with the 'nature' approach of Utzon in that the ramps have an 'organic' form towards it.

thus saying, the silkeborg museum has a powerful natural feel which was Utzon's intial approach and design.

I DONT KNOW WHY THE 3D MODEL JAVA THING WONT WORK.
LIKE, IT SHOWS AND WORKS WHEN I ENTER F12 INTO DREAMWEAVER AND EVERYTHING.
BUT WHEN I UPLOADED IT TO MY WEBSITE, IT JUST WILL NOT SHOW.
IVE FOLLWED THE INSTRUCTIONS AND EVERYTHING, SO I ASSUMED IT WOULD WORK... BUT DIDNT. ><"

the selected building

well, this is the piece of architecture i will be modelling through this experiment.
i have obtained various books and internet websites that has helped me btain this information. the Nakagin Capsule Tower will be somewhat a challenge in terms of modelling the tight and 'curved' interior spaces. another factor which may cause some difficulties are trying to find decent dimensions for the whole ground plan. however, i did somehow obtain dimensions for each capsule, and since all the capsules are the same size, i will use it to develop the whole architecture. i will use the program, 3ds max 2008, in which i will use Vray to create a realistic atmosphere to the model.

buildings to research

Image: Nakagin Capsule Tower

Kisho Kurokawa 1970 - Nakagin Capsule Tower

Nakagin Capsule Tower designed by Kurokawa is quite an interesting piece of architecture in the way it is designed as well as the orientation of the exterior and interior. the building provides a different depth of design, as it is unique and somewhat 'out of this world'. it just shows us how architecture can be limitless in designs. i would like to represent this architecture because of the reasons above, and i feel that i will have a lot of interest in researching this building further to help with my representation.

Image: Town Hall Hilversum

Willem Dudok 1928 - Town Hall Hilversum

the architecture, Hilversum town hall has a historical sense to its facade. however, simultaneously, has a contemporary feel due to its layout of rooms and etc. the building provides a lot of contrast to its natural sourrounding environment. i would like to represent this building because it has a great monumental aspect.

Image: German Pavillion, Barcelona http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/GermanPavilion/pavilion3.jpg accessed online 21 August 2008.
Ludwig Mies van Der Rohe 1929 - German Pavillion, Barcelona

The German Pavillion in Barcelona appeals to me, not only in its architecture, but also the time in which it was built. the architecture was built in 1929, however looks like a modern contemporary building in today's society. the architecture has many spaces and provides a sense of openness and a fresher environment once experiencing in the architecture. i would like to represent this architecture as it is aesthetically pleasing and provides a balance of nature as well.

Image: Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

Tadao Ando 2002 - Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth designed by Tadao Ando is quite recent (2002). I would like to represent this building as it shows great detail and design through its architecture. the large interiors and transparency of the building provides a modern depth which attracts my interest. the structure of the building with its water scene in front of the building provides a portrayal of calmness and serenity. this also provides the balance of nature and the built environment. hence, i have interest in representing this great piece of architecture.
